Are you still looking for a little adventure to do in 2010? Hope&Homes for Children (a charity I hope to raise some awareness for during some of my adventures) has an amazing program of small and big challenges for 2010, from running a half marathon, cycling from London to Paris or hiking to the Everest base camp. Its a great opportunity to meet new people, join a good fun adventure, get some extra motivation and help with the organisational stuff and all in the name of a good cause.

I am going to run the Bath marathon and perhaps a “quick” cycle to Paris, what is your favourit?

I just prove read a CV of a friend and was shocked by how many places he had already been to, so I decided to count all the countries I have set foot into (I cheated a little cause in five of them I was no longer than a day, still I am surprised) . Also I noticed that most of my travel as been quite limited to Europe, but there is still some time. If you would have to pick one country to visit (one you have not been to yet?), which would it be. It took me quite a long time to decide but I think I would love to get to know the Middle East and Asia, particularly India. And you?

I hope you all had a great start into the new decade. My cousin Eva had the great idea to continue celebrating every day of 2010 by lighting one sparklers. I think it has been the best new year resolution I heard this year . What are you gone do to enhance your life in 2010?

The Vegetarian option

Are you a vegetarian? If not, have you ever killed an animal to eat it? Perhaps you should!

I love meat and I have done so for as long as I remember. A few weeks back I went hunting with my dad and for the first time I was part of the ritual which puts food on the table of so many. I saw the life leaving the eyes of a one year old deer and I realised for the first time the magnitude of the moment. We took a few minutes to thank the animal and paid our last respect by placing a branch of one of the four holy trees in its mouth.

I am still enjoying meat (especially if from our own forest) but I hope I will not forget the sacrifice the animal gave. The least we can do is remember and enjoy every bite with respect (and cut down on farmed meat which is uneconomically and often involves disrespectful methods).

The Pursuit of Happyness

Sometimes it takes a month on the bike, a week in the mountains, a day in the forest, a jog in the morning OR a rainy Sunday and a good movie. Yes, I love a good movie, one which takes me by surprise, which lets me forget all around me, which inspirers, which tell me something new, which triggers emotion and imagination. Today it was the Smith Duo with their movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”, a great story about determination, love and trust.

At the annual dia-festival organised by the two world cyclists Axel and Peter, I was fascinated to meet some great adventurists who truly captured my imagination with their exiting stories. I was lucky to have a good chat with Monika and Heiner, who gave me a lift back to Switzerland (thanks again!!!). Having travelled Afghanistan for six month and riding through Mongolia and China with “the horses of the Dschingis Khan”, they inspired me but also taught me of the difficulties to earn your living as an adventurer.

Anyone still wondering what to do over the summer? If you really want to get to know a different country, its people and culture, you will have to live and work there for a little while. A while back I got the amazing opportunity work on one of SEEDS international volunteering project in Iceland. I never knew a work summer could be so fulfilling, eye opening and fun. Oscar is still running several project all summer, get involved and make a difference to yourself and the world around you.

I just got to Switzerland and wonder what mountains are waiting for me this time. As a finale Gerald and I will attempt the Eiger over the Mittelegigrat, perhaps one of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps. After the struggle and strive, standing on top of these magnificent creatures really makes your heart stop for a moment. Please find below a great poem by Dr Biswambhar Dash, The fact of life.

New

Swedish summer luck

I spend most of my childhood summers with my family in a remote holiday house in Sweden, far from any civilisation. My brother and I build boats, cross bows and rafts, swam, fished and explored the forests, hills and islands. A sense of freedom, to roam through the woods and discover nature every day new, to create and be part of adventures, to truly appreciate a warm supper and a good night sleep after a day in the outdoors, at these points I feel in love with life.
